Muted blue and purple lights were the only way to really see anything, lest I step on a lanyard-wearer mid-mantra.

Chris O'Connell/MySAįilled with plush couches and chairs and pillows dotting the room, I entered the Plant Music Lounge to find a dozen weary festival-goers either passed out or deep in meditation. Little did I know that the plants were about to play for me. I didn't even know what plant music was, other than that one Mort Garson record, Mother Earth's Plantasia, a hippie-ish mid-70s ambient recording that ushered in the idea of playing music for plants. He was worried about someone stealing them.Ĭlearly, not everyone has the correct plant music mindset. One guy in front of me seemed like he needed that break he had a rare pair of kicks and insisted on bringing them in with him. PlantWave's lounge runs through Thursday at SXSW. Through Thursday, March 16, the PlantWave Plant Music Lounge is your respite from SXSW madness, culminating with a show on Saturday night, March 18, by eminent ambient musician Laraaji - and some plants! - at Central Presbyterian Church. But it does have a couple rules: shoes off, vibes on.
